The Meanwood Village Association

Learn about Meanwood's past, enjoy its present, and help shape its future.

For over 35 years the Meanwood Village Association (M.V.A.) has been working to fulfil its aims to record, in all possible ways, the history of Meanwood, and to preserve its village atmosphere and environment.

During this time Meanwood has grown from a small village to a much larger suburb of Leeds yet still retains many of the features that could be seen there more than 150 years ago, such as the Parish Church (1849), the Meanwood Institute (early 1800s) and the Church of England Primary School (1840), pictured below.

Several publications have been produced that cover the different aspects of Meanwood, including the history of the valley and its industry, the history of the quarries and quarrymen and the story of cricket in Meanwood. There are booklets of reminiscences, as recounted by elderly residents, many of whom have since died.

In addition, several films have been made of events including hospital garden parties and fund raising activities for the school restoration. The archive of the Association holds photographs, tapes, newspaper articles, and written material, much of which would have been lost if it had not been for the enthusiasm of M.V.A. members.

Since the Association's formation in 1972, programmes of social events have included 'Beating the Bounds', quiz nights, guided walking tours, talks of local interest, slide and cine shows, indoor games nights, treasure hunts, and 'Pate & Plonk' lunches.

The Association also keeps a watchful eye on planning issues. Meetings and discussions with developers have resulted in modifications of plans to take into consideration the views of the residents of Meanwood.

The Meanwood Village Association is non-sectarian and non-political with any profits from events organised by the Association being used for the benefit of the community in Meanwood.
